Loskop Dam

Description

Loskop Dam is a dam located on the Olifant’s River near Groblersdal in Mpumalanga. Built in 1939 and renovated in 1979, the dam covers an area of 148km², and is used mainly for irrigation purposes. Measuring 30km long, Loskop is the longest dam in the southern hemisphere.

Nestled within the Loskop Dam Nature Reserve, visitors can look forward to spotting a number of wildlife, including several species of antelope, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, leopard, buffalo, hippo, warthog, and white rhino. The reserve supports a diverse array of birdlife.

The dam is also a popular recreational dam with plenty of fishing, water sports, and sailing opportunities. With a subtropical climate, the dam can be enjoyed all year round. Visitors can angle for fish like carp, blue and red breasted bream, yellow fish, sharptooth catfish, eel, and mudfish. Other activities in the area include hikes with overnight huts, horse riding, paintball, and mountain biking.
