Lowveld National Botanical Garden
Description
The Lowveld National Botanical Garden is one of the main attractions in Nelspruit, the capital city of Mpumalanga. The garden is one of 9 botanical gardens in South Africa, and expands to almost 160 hectares and has two rivers, namely the Crocodile and Nels Rivers, running through its middle. With over 2,000 species of plants, the garden is well worth a visit.
The garden enjoys high rainfall which ensures that it’s kept green throughout the year, hence why it’s called “the evergreen botanical gardensâ€. During the dry season (from May to September), concerts are often held here.
Check out the Nels River which descends into a waterfall in the west of the gardens. The suspension bridge offers a captivating view over the falls. A must see feature of the garden is its largest collection of cycads in Africa, as well as the yellow bush lilies and vivid flame creeper. The entire garden is wheelchair accessible.
