Description

The Port of East London is the only remaining river port in South Africa, situated at the mouth of the Buffalo River in the Eastern Cape. The general cargo port has good rail and road systems to the Free State, Gauteng, and KwaZulu-Natal, and acts as a gateway between Africa and the global market. The port also boasts South Africa’s largest grain elevator, which has been converted to handle imports as well as exports.

East London is a common user port and operates on a first come, first served basis. It has a multi-purpose terminal and container terminal on the East Bank, and a bulk terminal and car terminal on the West Bank. The car terminal has a 4-storey parking lot connected to the Daimler (Mercedes Benz) factory. The port also has a dry dock for ships of up to 200m and a maximum beam of 24.8m. The dock has four electric and one mobile crane. Cruise ships can use any available berth on the East Bank.

Latimer’s Landing Waterfront is a fantastic marine and leisure development on the banks of the Buffalo River. It’s a great place to grab a bite to eat or organise a river cruise.
