Description

Rand Stadium is a sports stadium in Rosettenville, a suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa. It was utilized as a training field for teams participating in the 2010 FIFA World Cup after being completely rebuilt and reopened in August 2008.

Rand Stadium was constructed between 1949 and 1951 with a capacity of 15,000. Over time extensive renovations have been carried out, the first between 1964 and 1965 in which facilities were added, and the second in 1976 that saw the installation of floodlights.

Before South Africa won the bid to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, Rand Stadium had for all intents and purposes been written off. With the soccer nations of the world set to arrive however, the stadium underwent a R76 million facelift .The 60 year old stadium now sports a new pitch, a new grandstand roof over the 3 000-seater grandstand, additional change rooms, and media facilities. The original look and feel of the stadium was retained. The new Rand Stadium was rebuilt as an all-seater stadium and the old scoreboard remains proudly in place, as a reminder of the stadium’s history.
