Sani Pass
Description
The Sani Pass, also called the Roof of Africa, takes travellers along a spectacular 9km mountain road that snakes its way from the Drakensberg in South Africa, into Lesotho. Once at the summit of the pass, visitors can enjoy Maluti Beer from Lesotho at the Sani Top pub, the highest pub in South Africa at 2,874m.
The route up Sani Pass starts at 1544m and climbs 1332m vertically to a height of 2876m. The road is both challenging and dangerous and requires use of a 4x4 vehicle. After a lot of rain, there are several waterfalls that run over the road. Drivers must practise caution when tackling the route as it has been known to have claimed many lives. Sometimes, the remains of vehicles that have teetered over the edge can still be seen.
While South African immigration at the bottom of the pass stops vehicles not fit for the journey, the Lesotho border agents at the summit usually allow all types of vehicles to descend. The pass is often closed due to weather conditions, particularly during winter.
Accommodation at the top includes rooms in the lodge, a backpackers with dorm rooms, and camping. Please note that there are no proper campsites or facilities, and you'll have to make use of the backpackers facilities.
