SMACK! Republic Brewing Co. is the only micro-brewery in Johannesburg’s inner city. This artisan brewery was born from 3 beer enthusiasts who are not afraid to push the boundaries and produce styles of beer that have never been seen before by the majority of South Africa’s public.

The name “SMACK!” has several meanings. Firstly, “smack” is a slang term for yeast, which is the lifeblood of brewing. Secondly, it represents the fight for the respect of real beer on the streets of Jozi. Thirdly, it symbolizes the collision between the old city charm and inner city revival; a sentiment that is the heartbeat of what SMACK! represents: “Be different. Drink bold. Forge the future.”

The brewery brings together the world of craft beer and art. A quick visit to SMACK! Republic and you’ll quickly see evidence of this in everything they do, from their unusual flavours and distinctive bottle designs, to their gallery space where monthly exhibitions are hosted for up and coming photographers, artists, and musicians.

SMACK! Republic currently offer 3 beers themed around downtown Jozi. The Bree Street Belle is a well-rounded Golden Ale with moderate bitterness and a subtle floral nose. The Maboneng Maverick is a bold Biere de Saison with naartjie peel and black pepper. The Braamfontein Brawler is a tough, bitter India Pale Ale with aromas of passion fruit and pine. SMACK! Republic also do experimental brews every month with flavours such as coffee, raw chocolate, honey, passion fruit, etc.

SMACK! Republic now also stocks a range of Barrettsridge beer bread.

Beer tastings and brewing courses

• SMACK! Republic is open every Sunday from 10am - 4pm, and the first Thursday of every month from 7pm - 11pm. But they’ll be expanding their hours towards the end of the year (2013). • Beer and food pairings are hosted on Saturday afternoons in winter and Saturday evenings in summer. During the tour, you’ll visit 7 different restaurants in the Maboneng Precinct and pair their dishes with beers from SMACK! Republic and other brewers. • Home brew intro courses will soon be hosted.
