Description

The Donkin Reserve is a famous tourist attraction in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape. The Donkin Reserve features a renowned lighthouse and a stone pyramid monument erected by Sir Rufane Donkin in memory of his late wife, Elizabeth, after whom the city was named.

The Donkin Lighthouse was built in 1861 and has been declared a national monument. It houses the Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism office which serves as the official Tourist Information Centre in Port Elizabeth.

Momento’s of Africa volunteered to refurbish the lighthouse and arranged displays on all 7 floors, as well as reintroduced the flashing light at night. The lighthouse is the best place for an overall view of the city. Other additions to the reserve include a flagpole which flies the largest South African in the country.
