Description
The University of Cape Town (UCT) is a public research university in Cape Town, Western Cape. Founded in 1829 as the South African College, it is the oldest university in South Africa.
The main teaching campus, known as Upper Campus, is situated on Rhodes Estate on the slopes of Devil’s Peak. It is centred on Jameson Hall where prestigious events such as graduation ceremonies and examinations are held. You will also find the main library and various food outlets within the ivy clad buildings.
On the other side of the sports fields and M3 highway are Middle and Lower Campus. These are spread throughout the suburbs of Rondebosch, Rosebank, and Mowbray and contain the Law faculty, South African College of Music, School of Economics, student residences, university administrative offices, and sporting facilities, including the gym.
The faculty of Health Sciences is located on the Medical School campus next to Groote Schuur Hospital in Observatory. The art and drama department is located on Hiddingh Campus where you will find the interdisciplinary Gordon Institute for Performing and Creative Arts (GIPCA), the Michaelis School of Fine Art, and the Michaelis Gallery.
UCT has 36 different sports clubs, including team, individual, and extreme sports, as well as martial arts. The university’s rugby team are known as the “Ikey Tigers”, which are power players in the televised Varsity Cup.
