University Of The Western Cape
Description
The University of the Western Cape (UWC) is a public university in Bellville, Cape Town. It was established in 1960 by the South African government as a university for coloured people only. The university is proud of its participation in the liberation struggle and aims to play an active role in building an independent and unbiased society. Today UWC is one of the best universities in South Africa.
The university began as a “bush college” - a university college without independence, under sponsorship of the University of South Africa. It offered limited training for low to mid-level positions in schools and civil service.
UWC students were involved in the foundation of Bush Radio, an anti-apartheid media project which circulated political and cultural radio programming via cassette tape because it lacked the license to broadcast on a conventional radio platform. By 1993, it went on air as a pirate (unregulated) radio station and eventually became the first licensed community radio station in South Africa.
