Waterberg Wilderness Reserve
Description
The Waterberg Wilderness Reserve is situated in Mokopane on the eastern side of the Waterberg mountain range in Limpopo. The reserve is located only 2.5 hours away from Johannesburg and halfway to Botswana.
The reserve is home to a large number of animal species, over 250 bird species, and many reptile species. Wildlife includes leopard, giraffe, impala, kudu, eland, caracal, serval, African wildcat, hyena, honey badger, bushpig, warthog, and aardvark. Smaller species to be spotted include pangolin, dassie, porcupine, mongoose, Cape clawless otter, vervet monkey, and Chacma baboon.
There are spectacular viewpoints throughout the reserve, offering vistas of hills, valleys, gorges, and natural streams. The reserve is ideal for the energetic with several beautiful walks and mountain bike trails.Game drives are allowed in your own 4×4 vehicles and both guided game walks and game drives can be arranged with prior notice.
Certain areas of the Waterberg Wilderness Reserve offer spectacular views over the surrounding hills and valleys and exploring the impressive gorges with natural streams and pools is certainly a highlight. The reserve is ideal for the more active with some beautiful walks and potential mountain bike trails. Due to the rugged nature of the reserve, a 4×4 vehicle or vehicle with good ground clearance is recommended to access the property. In the wet season a 4×4 vehicle is essential.
