Description

Umtamvuna Nature Reserve is the southernmost nature reserve in KwaZulu-Natal, most famous for its excellent bird watching opportunities with over 250 species of birds having been recorded. The reserve preserves a 30km stretch of the Umtamvuna River gorge that supports a thick subtropical forest. The 3,247 hectare reserve boasts a fine display of flowers in spring, numerous walking trails, riverine forest, steep rocky cliffs, and plenty of wildlife, from bushbuck and baboon, to serval and samango monkeys.

  • Lourie Trail: 2km, 1 hour
  • Ingungumbane Trail: 4km, 3 hour
  • Impunzi Trail: 8km, 4 hour
  • Fish Eagle Trail: 8k, 4 hour
  • Nkonka Trail: 8km, 6 hour
  • Shorter 500m walks

Should you wish to be accompanied by a guide, it’s recommended you book a few days in advance. Maps and information can be gathered from the entrance gates. Toilets and braai facilities are available at the northern entrance gate.
